Society of Simon of Cyrene
A Group offering companionship on behalf of the parish
to parishioners who are housebound / semi housebound
The parishes in the team ministry area of Drimnagh, Crumlin and Clogher Road were very fortunate to have a good response from people who were interested in volunteering for this new ministry and to date over twenty five people have undergone a six night training course, run in collaboration with the local HSE and with support from the community section of the Gardai. In addition, all of the volunteers have Garda vetting and all have two referees who can vouch for their suitability.
The intention is that if somebody would like a visitor from the parish – and we have volunteers from all three parishes in this cluster area – they contact the parish office and leave their name and phone number. Gráinne Prior, the pastoral worker will make an appointment to meet and to explain the scheme. From there, the person who would like a visitor is matched with someone of similar interests. Gráinne will accompany and introduce the visitor on the first visit and thereafter will provide support and backup. Each visitor is asked to give a commitment of one hour once a week – at a time and day to be arranged with the person they are visiting. Needless to say, confidentiality is at the heart of the group.
The Society of Simon of Cyrene was set up at the suggestion of parishioners. Every ministry helps to put flesh on the love and kindness of God. We hope this new ministry in the parishes of Drimnagh, Crumlin and Clogher Road will grow and flourish.
