History

The first houses were built in Drimnagh in the mid 1930s with the roads named after Irish mountains.  On the 9th, of April 1943 the Parish of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Mourne Road was established.

In the intervening years, many people dedicated their time, efforts and talents in developing Drimnagh as a community and many organisations came into being.

As early as 1936, Drimnagh had its own Residents Association. In 1944, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul started what was to be a very busy service to the area. In 1954 the Good Counsel Gaelic Football Club was formed, which has since produced a host of players going on to county level.

1944 also marked the opening of the St. John Bosco club. Many parishioners sought to build a community centre and after much fundraising Our Lady's Hall opened on October 30th 1955.  This was the first of many community based societies to be set up that included Girl Guides, Our Lady's Hospital, Musical Society, Health Clinic and Meals on Wheels, to name but a few.  In 1969, the Drimnagh Credit Union took over the affairs of the Mourne Road Credit Union which had been launched a few years earlier.

It was with great pride that the Mother McAuley Centre was officially opened on September 6th 1975.This centre provides services for the growing number of senior citizens in Drimnagh – some of its members today are people who first came to the new community of Drimnagh in the 1930's.

The Drimnagh Basketball Club. Was born in 1983. The GAA Club House, Davitt Road, opened in 1988.

In April, 1993, President Mary Robinson officiated at Drimnagh's Golden jubilee celebration. On Sunday, 6th April 2003, Our President Mary McAleese attended Mass in our Parish Church to mark our diamond jubilee.
